Summer is here - don't miss out on this awesome one-of-a-kind van conversion! My husband and I bought this van in March 2023 specifically to do a 3-month road trip across the U.S. from California to PA and it did not disappoint! We've had a fantastic time, but sadly our trip is coming to an end and we will be returning to our home in Australia, so it's time to pass it on to the next intrepid traveler! A lot of thought and effort has gone into this build to create a camper van that punches well above its weight. In a previous life this was a Stanley Steamer van (5.4L Ford E250), so from the outside this looks like a commercial vehicle, and this combined with the tinted windows and curtains provide complete privacy which makes it great for stealth camping when needed. However, inside is another story, with beautiful and homely wooden interior detailing, dimmable lights, a comfy bed and a solar setup that enables everything to run completely off grid. Just add gas and water and you have a very comfortable and liveable space while you're on the road! Below is a breakdown of what you can expect living and traveling in this van: Electrics The electrics in the living space is provided by 2 deep cycle batteries that are completely separate from the car battery. These are charged from the 200 watt solar panels mounted to the roof and provide a 12V DC supply to the dimmable interior lights, roof top vent fan, 2 USB charging ports and a water pump for the sink/shower. In addition, the batteries feed a 1000W inverter to provide a 110V AC supply to the fridge and ignition for the gas stove top. These are simply plugged into the inverter so if needed more appliances (e.g. laptops) can be plugged in as required. The van is completely off grid (and does not require any external hook up). In the three months we have been traveling in this van we have never run out of juice. Cooking The kitchen has 2 gas stove tops connected via a hose and regulator to a 1lb propane tank that slots in behind the drivers seat. You can pick up a two-pack of these tanks from Walmart for $8 which will last for around a week if you are cooking 2/3 meals a day on it. Under the stove top is a cutlery draw and fridge, and to the side is around 2 feet of countertop space for meal prep and more kitchen storage for food. Washing The sink sits on top of 2 x 5 gallon tanks (we use one for fresh and one for grey) with the water pump sitting out of sight beneath the sink. Not only is this great for washing up/ brushing teeth etc, but as the tap rotates 360 degrees and has an extendable hose, it can be converted to an outside shower - perfect in hot weather or after a long hike! Living/Sleeping The interior has a homely wooden finish insulated with foam board and feels really cozy, particularly at night with the lights dimmed. The interior fan can be used as an extractor fan when cooking, and a ceiling fan when sleeping in warmer weather. This is a low top van with an interior height of 52 inches so you aren't going to be walking around inside; instead, we used a ice box that doubled as a stool when doing any cooking or washing at the sink. The rear bed can be converted to a seating area during the day (see photos), although once we were on the road we choose to just get up and go as the bed provides all the comfort and functionality that you need. Driving The van drives really well and handles very smoothly for its size. The Ford Econoline series are very reliable and the only things we have needed to replace are the rear tires and the starter motor, which was recommended after the initial PA inspection in March 2023. After that we had it shipped to California to drive it back to PA and it hasn't skipped a beat. She is tried and tested, and has a lot of life left!
