Seller's Description
1986 VW Vanagon Syncro Westfalia for sale. I never understood people who said “I never thought I would sell it…” But here we are. The family is getting bigger and priorities change. I’ve had this van for almost 20 years. Bought it from a geology professor in Boise, Idaho. I am the 3rd owner. The van is located in Billings, Montana with clean title in hand. If you are looking for a Syncro that has been well taken care of and modified to fulfill modern day driving and camping requirements (please see the list of all the upgrades and pictures), with respect to originality and collectible status of the vehicle, then this van is for you. This is a rust free van that spent its life in dry climate of Idaho, Nevada and now Montana. Rarely driven in the winter. Overland ready, no expense spared. Many tasteful upgrades to make it a very capable and reliable rig. It has very high off-roading capabilities thanks to both from and back locking differentials and you can choose between 2WD and 4WD on the fly thanks to a decoupler which offers amazing maneuverability in the city. This rig can surprise many Jeeps on hard to get to trails! I have receipts and pictures of some of the major work. I have also done a lot of the work myself with the intent of keeping the car forever and would love to see it go to the right, new owner. Upgrades: 2003 2.5 SOHC Subaru engine professionally rebuild with new pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, timing belt, water pump, etc. Reconditioned head and valve job. The engine power band is excellent for the van, gets 16-20 mpg, and is very quiet and smooth. It drives like a modern van. The engine has about 15K miles on it. I run 5W-30 Synthetic oil and change in every 3K miles or less. VanCafe Magnaflow exhaust system and heat shield. SmallCar high clearence aluminum 5qt oil pan. New Subaru stage 2 clutch and pressure plate, new Subaru flywheel, Subaru starter mounted to a SmallCar bell housing - accessible from under the van. THIS IS A 3 KNOB VAN with front and back locker and a decoupler. Transmission and front differential rebuilt by Bill at Arizona Transaxle, 15K miles ago (at the same time the engine was rebuilt). A lot of upgraded transmission parts including oiling plates installation. I run LAT 85w110 racing oil from Rancho transaxle. Brand new Sport Viscous Coupler from German Transaxle. Full (windows out) dual color paint job. Seam treatment, undercarriage and wheel well coating. Pop top was painted at the same time. All the decals are under the clear coat. All new German window and door rubber seals. Window tint. Front brakes are the Audi dual piston G60 calipers with vented rotors. Rear disk brakes from a 2003 VW Eurovan. 16” Audi aluminum wheels with brand new 215/70R16 A/T tires + one full spare. New power steering rack New Bilstein shocks New wheel bearings, CV joints. E30 BMW brake booster, new braided steel brake lines. Front Bull Bar Terra podz LED driving lights with smoked side markers High output GoWesty headlights German front wheel arch flares, front and back German original mud flaps. Diesel heater under the driver seat. Shower connector located at the rear hatch cabinet. GoWesty 3 window pop-top canvas. ARB Awning Portable toilet in its own cabinet. New upholstery. Fresh engine and transmission/front diff oil change. Plenty more. In full transparency, this is not a trailer queen or a collectible quality piece. It was used for its intended purpose. You can find some scratches and chips both outside and in the interior. It is still almost 40 year old vehicle, and even though it’s been completely restored and updated and rarely driven during the winter, it’s been still used for our family adventures. $75,000 price is OBO. However it reflects it’s honest and transparent condition as I try to best represent it online. It drives extremely well and has taken our family on many adventures. VW’s come with their quirks, but this van is well sorted and will be perfect for the right buyer. We can coordinate a pick up at Billings Airport if needed. First come, first served.
