Meet Martin Van Buren, our 2007 Dodge Sprinter that we lovingly converted into a fully self contained house on wheels. We have lived in this van full time for 8 months. Martin has taken us nearly 20,000 trouble-free miles while visiting some of the nation's most spectacular national parks. This van is fully off grid with no need for plugging into campground water or power. The 200ah lithium battery is charged by the vehicle's alternator while driving. This function is activated automatically by the Victron DC-DC charger when the van is started. The 200W solar panels keep the battery charged between drives. The van can also be plugged into shore power if parked for long periods with no sunlight; however, in our 8 months of travel we have never needed to plug in. The sink uses an in-tank water pump that is activated when the faucet is turned on. The black out curtains provide privacy in seconds. Insulated window coverings are also included for the windshield and both front side windows. The 2 rear sliding windows provide great ventilation throughout the van when the fan is turned on. Air is pulled directly across the bed for those warmer nights. Bug net for side sliding door included which attaches with velcro and closes magnetically. The full size bed can remain with the van if desired. It can also be removed and replaced with a queen or king. We currently use the extra space next to the bed for clothing bins which fit perfectly. The sliding kitchen table seats 2 adults comfortably. The seat cushions are removable for cleaning or reupholstering as needed. The Coleman stove has its own storage compartment in the backrest of the kitchen table seat which allows for maximum counter space when needed. Two full size bikes can be mounted either on the back door for quick access, or underneath the bed in the garage area for a more stealth appearance. Despite having 290,000 miles, the Mercedes 3.0 liter Diesel engine runs very well and has plenty of power. This van has taken really great care of us and never let us down, I wouldn't hesitate to take it cross country again on another adventure.
