The complete buildout was documented and available via an Instagram Highlight @PutACamperInIt Overall Specs: - 1974 Dodge B200 Shortie Van - Slant 6 engine with an automatic transmission - ~20700 miles on the odometer, though old paperwork shows maintenance around 80k so I’m going to assume it’s rolled over making its true mileage ~120,700. - Custom paint job - Secondary cabin power system that runs off the battery while driving but also has a solar panel for battery maintenance. - Loads of lighting options and vent fan in the roof. - Full size bed with brand new mattress, 12v fridge, water faucet, and tons of storage. - Pull out camp kitchen with gas stove. - Easy to use privacy curtains. - Fully restored front cab with upgraded seats and new lighting system. - Fully insulated with natural wool and all wood is finished in a food safe oil. - No power steering or AC. Full Story Back in 1974, this van was used as a utility work vehicle for the Southern Bell telephone company in Texas. While I’m not sure how it ended up in Bellingham (where I found it last year), I’m so stoked she made her way it into my shop. After life as a work vehicle, Rosie was owned by the same family for many years and they kept great service records! She was clearly loved and never neglected. Mechanically the van is in great shape. Starts up easy, fun to drive, and all analog so everything is easy to fix and parts are still widely available. The transmission appears to be in good condition (shifts smoothly when it should) and I just did a valve adjustment which bumped the MPG up to about 14 highway, 12 city/mountain. The tires are in great condition and it just received a front brake job with all warrantied NAPA parts. The exterior has a very unique paint job that’s full of imperfections, thin areas that show the primer, and areas of light surface rust. I LOVE IT. This van has been renovated, not restored to like-new. I treated the exterior paint with Sweet Patina, a water-inhibiting topical treatment that cures to a hard finish, preserving a vintage vehicle's paint as-is, but stopping future rust. The previous owners added a marine-style topical treatment to the roof because of some areas that had leaked in the past and it is holding up great. Prior to building the camper interior, I treated/removed any remaining rust and made sure it’s all watertight. The undercarriage is free of rust and in great shape. The van's cockpit has been completely overhauled with a custom-painted dash, new super comfortable seats, and an upgraded stereo system. This is an old analog van, so while it doesn’t have that many gauges to begin with, but they all work! Camper Stuff - Pull out kitchen with simple one knob gas cooktop and night time grill light. - Multiple places to charge whatever you need, both 12v and 120v, on a maintenance-free power system. - Tons of lighting options to set the mood however you’d like. - Easy to use curtains that let you go from parked to private in 30 seconds or less. - Full-size bed with 5” thick memory foam mattress and under storage accessible from the interior. - Electric fridge that is positioned behind the driver so you can grab a drink on the go. - Water faucet that is positioned out the back for easy use while cooking and connected to a self-priming pump with 6gal capacity water tank. - Custom everything made out of wonderful lightweight materials to save on gas without saving on style. - Overhead storage cabinet, full vertical closet, bedside storage drawers, large pullout storage drawer out the back, utility storage compartments. No wasted space! Power System: The camper has a dedicated 12v power system so you can use everything while off-grid without needing to turn on the van. The secondary battery (100AMP hour) in the camper charges while you drive, but also has a solar panel attached for general battery maintenance, and to give you some extra juice if you’re parked in one spot for ages. Build Style / Materials What physically makes it into my campers is very important to me. Wherever possible I choose to utilize reclaimed or salvaged materials, things that can be used, abused, broken and then fixed. There is no MDF or particle board, and plastics are used only when I couldn’t find an alternative. The wood is finished in a food-grade oil, the same as what you’d find on a nice wood countertop, and the cabinets have a hard wax topcoat that’s super durable and easy to clean. The electrical components, mattress, and appliances are all brand new (with manufacturer warranty), but nearly all of the wood was salvaged. I like showing people that reclaimed materials don’t need to look like they’re “rustic”, though I do always leave a few imperfections as a nice reminder of the material's long lifespan, [ie: some nail holes in the aromatic cedar door panels that were once lining someone's closet here in the PWN].
