Seller's Description
1986 Subaru Powered 2-Knob VW Syncro 4WD Vanagon Westfalia (CA CARB smog legal) This is an amazing turn-key VW Syncro 4WD Westy Camper. Built with adventures in the great outdoors in mind, and ready to roll. No rust, no problems, no headaches. Just fun. I’m the 3rd owner and have had this van for 20 years. It started life in the Bay Area and then moved to CO to live life as our mountain getaway. It was rarely driven in winter - it usually is under the car cover all winter. I have meticulously maintained and improved this van to be as safe, solid, reliable and modern as you can realistically make it. My family of 4 has enjoyed this van for 2 decades of camping fun. It’s in amazing shape and ready for more! Located in Denver CO metro area. VIN: WV2ZB0250GG069333 Titled in CO - this is a factory authentic Syncro Westfalia - not a conversion Full Westfalia camper package Approximately 283k mi on van / speedo replacement at around 183k before I acquired it, now reads 100k, I have CarFax report highlighting the mileage shift, all suspension/steering rebuilt in last 40k, 18k on new motor, 12k since last tranny rebuild – Super solid and drives great! Engine: Subaru 2.5/2.2 hybrid-build, hi-torque motor - (what some refer to as Frankenmotor) Huge drivability improvement over stock 2.2, some say better than a 2.5, strong torque off idle, big flat torque curve, pulls hard to 6000 rpm, exactly what this van needs. This conversion is done with stock Subaru parts. The only non-standard part is the head gasket, which are readily available aftermarket. Nothing made of unobtainium. New/0 miles 2.5 STI long block Rebuilt EJ22 polished/ported heads for better airflow Cast pistons for greater durability 5qt SmallCar cast aluminum oil pan New radiator w stainless steel coolant pipes and new hoses Built by Metric Motors in UT in 2020, 18k mi on motor, this motor was built to work hard and be very reliable – which it has been. Happy to intro to the builder if you have questions. CA CARB plaque in engine bay - smog emissions legal in CA (only 2.2l OBD1 EJ22 are legal in CA) - passes CO emissions easily every year This motor combo was designed to run on regular octane, its not a high compression combo that requires premium – always used synthetic oil VDO 3-gauge pod on dash: oil temp, oil pressure, voltage Spare Subaru alternator Original 2.2 installed by H&R Motors in 2005 to a very high-quality conversion level to earn CARB cert Full documentation for both motor builds, transaxle rebuilds as well as full mods and service history Suspension/Drivetrain upgrades: 2 Knob (rear diff/decoupler) Syncro 5 spd manual with rear diff lock and crawler gear 12k mi on full rebuild (2022), new R&P, new 3rd and 4th gears, synchros, bearings, oiling plates, new clutch, shifter rebuild, etc Decoupler installed – allows for part time 4wd. Better off-road, better on road. Front suspension rebuilt with GW control arm bushings and all new bushings F&R GW – SA Big Brake front disc brakes with SS braided lines GW – Rear disc brake kit – major improvement over stock drum brakes HD 944 CV / Boot kit for rear axles Newer steering rack, new rack boots Safety upgrades: GW 3-point seat belt upgrade for rear bench w/ removable Vanagon headrests - much better rear seat passenger protection than a stock camper with lap belts GW LED 3rd brake light kit LED bulb replacements on all exterior/interior lights GW HD steel rear bumper w/ Class 3 hitch 4 pin wiring plug for trailer lights GW no-flop / foldable side view mirrors – major improvement – trust me Camper: lower bunk new 4” foam w/ 2” memory foam topper w/cover Truckfridge T49 AC/DC 49qt Fridge, runs off AC or DC (via battery, alternator or solar panels (included)) Major improvement over stock fridge – double the capacity of the original one, makes ice, keeps popsicles frozen and beer cold. Propex HS2000 propane heater w thermostat – mounted under bench w false floor cover for protection Power: Coach battery under drivers seat – 65ah deep cycle – powers stereo, USB outlets, cabin lights, heater. Charged by alternator or AC charger. Fridge battery under big drop bin, 100ah deep cycle – dedicated to fridge, charged by solar input, alternator or AC charger. Samlex 15a battery charger/tender – for coach and fridge batteries – connected to van’s AC plug system All batteries equipped with isolators to protect starter battery General upgrades and updates: 2025 Partial repaint – $8k of work to address typical seam rust before it became a more expensive issue. This is very common on Vanagons. All body seams sandblasted/treated/sealed properly and re-painted. Entire front end/doors and rear hatch repainted. Lower body bed liner treatment to prevent rock chips - which there were a lot of. Windshield, rear window and one side window light rust repaired - new gaskets. Luggage rack gel coat refinished. The rest of the paint is in good condition, but this will make any future re-spray significantly cheaper due to all the work that has been done to correct poor body/paint work from the past. I have picture documentation of the work. New fuse panel – 2025 New front heater core and blower motor – 2019 Recaro LXF front bucket seats $3k value – GW mounting hardware – passenger on swivel base, driver swivel base available – these seats are a game changer! Sound deadening mat material installed on floors/doors/dash/engine cover/rear hatch GW Pop-top gas lift struts – makes raising the top super easy High quality GW car cover for winter storage Samlex 135w Tri-fold solar panel/charge controller with carry suitcase – plugs into PV plug on side of van to charge Fridge/Coach battery. Opportunities for improvement: Speedometer could be rebuilt - since I bought the van 20 yrs ago the speedo needle sticks and gets stuck around 30mph. Odometer works! I was going to fix it and have the odometer adjusted to reflect actual mileage but it never was a priority. I use a speedometer app that is easier to see and is more accurate. The iPhone (deactivated) and app will be included if you want them. Poptop tent is showing its age. The window flap zipper is broken. Zipper on the screen is fine. We use clips to keep it shut when needed. There are a lot of options for new poptop tents in terms of materials and styles, so I figured I’d leave that choice up to the next owner. Decoupler and Diff Lock panel indicator lights don’t light up, just need to be replaced. Decoupler and Diff Lock function, just not the lights.
